People of German ethnic origin moved to Russian territory for many reasons at many times. They lived in several different regions, including areas now in Ukraine, Kasakhstan and Moldova.

Their old German homes might not be in Germany any longer - they could be in Poland or Russia or the Czech Republic. That means that some people who are researching Germans from Russia are actually dealing with Ukrainians from Poland.
