Male and Female, with English equivalents

A note about Slovenian grammar: In reading family correspondence, or church and civil records, you may find names spelled differently than you see below. You may expect to find an ancestor “Maria” but instead find “Mario”. This is because the Slovenian language conjugates nouns, including proper names. You will see the same name in many forms depending where it is in a sentence. For instance: “John married Mary”. Mary is “Maria”, but the church record would read “Janez porocen Mario”. Since Maria is the object of the sentence the ending is changed to “o”, or Mario.

Some examples of conjugated male and female names are at the bottom of this page.
